Apuntes/Roughs

Este es un ejercicio. Quería capturar ese algo que hace que algunas personas sean raras. No personas estrambóticas o excéntricas en cuanto a su vestimenta o peinados sino, más bien, personas que resultan extrañas por una cuestión más indefinible y sutil. Individuos andróginos o parecieran operadas o, de algún modo, artificiales. Las fotos de algunos reclusos de una penitenciaria al sur de EU a principios del siglo resultaron ideales. Tal vez la idea quede más clara una vez que se ve el apunte.

This is an exercise. I wanted to capture that something that makes some people weird. Not wacky or eccentric people regarding their hairstyle or clothing, but rather people that strike you as strange for a more subtle and undecipherable reason. Androgynous individuals or people that look as if they were operated or artificial in some manner. The pics of some of the convicted at a southern penitentiary in the U.S. from early twentieth century turned out very useful. You might get a better idea once you look at the sketches.

Concepto Magoo/Magoo concept

Acabamos de terminar nuestro último largometraje animado: Kung Fu Magoo. El protagonista es Mr. Magoo a quien algunos recordaran por sus cortos animados. Cuando estábamos conceptualizando el arte, yo propuse esta apariencia para el personaje. Los productores optaron por un look mucho más fiel al original, pero me resulta divertida esta versión.

We’ve just finished our latest animated feature: Kung Fu Magoo. Mr. Magoo stars on it and some might recall him from his animated shorts. When we were making concepts for the film’s art, I came up with this design for the character. In the end, the producers chose a look similar to the original, but I still find this version amusing.

Comision desconocida/Unknown Assingnment

Buscando entre los discos viejos algo que subir a este blog, me tope con esto. Estoy seguro de que se trata de trabajo aunque no tengo idea de para que lo hice o quien me lo pidió. Me gustaría experimentar más con este estilo de blanco y negro solamente, sin medios tonos.

Searching through old discs for something to upload to t this blog, I came across this. I’m quite sure this was some sort of work, but I have no idea what it was for or who asked for it. I’d like to experiment more with this black and white style more, avoiding half tones.

Vaso de "El Agente 00-p2"/"Agent Macaw" Cup

Cuando inicie este blog, escribí como estaba justo a mitad de un proyecto que esperaba poder terminar. Hace ocho meses que la película se estreno y le fue bien. Este mes ha salido el DVD a la renta (y próximamente a la venta en su tienda de confianza).
Este es el diseño para un vaso de refresco que salió como mercancía promocional en los cines. Si alguno de ustedes tiene dos, no sean gachos y regálenme uno ya que yo no pude conseguir el mío.

When I began this blog, I wrote about how I was in the middle of a project and how I hoped I would be able to finish it. It’s been eight months now since the movie premiered and it did well. This month the DVD is coming out for rent (and soon for sale in a store near you).
This is the design I did for soda cups that came out as promotional merchandise in theaters. If someone has two of them, be a sport and give me one since I was unable to get one for myself.

“Chicken Nugget Lemmon Tooty” es el blog donde los hijos del ilustrador Aaron Zenz (de entre 4 y 9 años) muestran sus dibujos. El blog es muy divertido y los conceptos de los niños sorprendentes en muchos casos. Con motivo del tercer aniversario de su blog, Aaron ha convocado a los ilustradores que visitan su página a hacer una interpretación de alguno de los dibujos de sus hijos. Es un buen pretexto para experimentar con temas nuevos. Este es el resultado de mi propuesta. El dibujo original es de Gracie y muestra porque no debes de darle nunca helado a un robot. “Chicken Nugget Lemmon Tooty” is the blog where Illustrator Aaron Zen’s kids (aged 4 to 9 )display their own drawings. The blog is lots of fun and in many cases; the children’s concepts are amazing. Celebrating 3 years of the blog’s creation, Aaron has invited illustrators who visit the page to make their interpretation of any of the kids drawings. It’s a great excuse for experimenting with new subjects. This is the result of my entry. The original drawing was done by Gracie and shows why you should never give a robot ice cream. Una variable más para el diseño de la página que comentaba en la entrada previa. La idea era que la página mostrara un diseño fuera diferente de manera aleatoria cada vez que fuera visitada.

Another version for the page I told you about on my previous post. The idea was for the page to display a different design in a random manner each time it was visited.

Wolf Foker

Este es el diseño de una página web. Se trataba de una página para niños y quise probar haciendo algo mitad abstracto mitad figurativo. Pensé que, cuando se trata de niños, no se recurre mucho a la abstracción. Espero que se entienda que se trata de un avión. Ja ja. Según yo, “Wolf Foker” es el nombre de estos aviones. Seguro en España los llamaban los follalobos.

This is the design for a web page. It was a children’s page and I wanted to try out doing something half abstract and half figurative. I thought that, when doing kid’s stuff, it is not so common to apply abstractions. I hope that the plane is readable. I believe that “Wolf Foker” is the name for these planes. I made a joke about that, but since it’s a joke about how it is translated, it is un translatable. (No prize for guessing what the joke was about, though.)

En continuidad con mi entrada anterior, el molde del juguete fue cambiado varias veces. Esta es la propuesta para el modelo número dos con el mismo tema.

Hola de nuevo. Los últimos mensajes que ha recibido este blog me han motivado para actualizarlo con regularidad de nuevo. Trataré de que al menos cada semana haya una entrada nueva.
Esta que ven es una propuesta para decorar un molde en blanco que se nos repartió a varios dibujantes e ilustradores al estilo de los Dunnys. A cada uno de nosotros se nos asigno un tema. El mío fue el sexo.

This here is a sketch for a blank toy to be decorated by various illustrators who were given the mold. Much like the Dunnys. Each one of us was assigned a theme. Mine was: Sex.

HA LLEGADO EL CASCARRABIAS /THE GRUMP HAS ARRIVED

Se ha puesto de moda últimamente el que los ilustradores hagan reinterpretaciones de personajes clásicos de la animación. Predomina la preferencia por series de los 70’S Y 80’S y sin embargo parece que nadie se ha interesado por este personaje. Los capítulos eran algo lentos y la animación no era la mejor, sin duda, pero su concepto psicodélico y absurdo me resultaban interesantes y de una identidad única. Seguramente marca a mi generación no tanto por el programa en si, sino por la insistencia con que fue transmitido y repetido durante, al menos siete años; sin duda, porque nuestras televisoras en México no contaban con muchos programas en ese entonces.



It’s been a fad lately for illustrators to render reinterpretations of classical animation characters. There seems to be a preference towards 70’s and 80’s series. Never the less it seems no one has taken interest for this character. The programs were a tad slow and animation certainly wasn’t the best, no doubt, but I fancied the psychedelic and absurd concept as interesting and of a unique identity. It certainly marks my generation, not so much for the program, but rather for the stubborn transmission and retransmission of the chapters for more than seven years, no doubt, because our Mexican stations didn’t had too many programs then.

Mas de Yo Gang/ More Yo Gang

This is another scene from my Project. I intend for the final animation to be framed by the two typical black borders from an old movie adapted for the TV screen.

Juego de Basket/Basketball Game

Esta gorila la realicé como la columna sobre la que se montaran varias canastas de basketball, uno de cuatro juegos que me pidieron que realizara para la fiesta de clausura de una campaña de reciclaje. Del Valle, uno de los patrocinadores, es una marca importante de jugos concentrados en México.

I did this gorilla girl, as the column where several basketball nets would rest, one of the four games I was asked to illustrate for the closing party for recycling campaign. Del Valle, one of the sponsors for the campaign, is an important brand of concentrated juice in Mexico.

Last night, the last debate between the candidates for Mexico’s presidency was held. This quick sketch is an exercise. YO-GANG

Este es uno de los conceptos para un proyecto personal que estoy desarrollando (no esperen oír de el en unos cinco años). Se llama “Yo-Gang” y pretende ser una película al estilo film-noir con tendencia expresionista. ¿¿¿??? (Yo tampoco lo tengo muy claro).

This is a concept for a personal project that I’m developing at present (do not expect to hear anything from it in some five years). It’s called “Yo-Gang” and it intends to be a movie in the film-noir style with an expressionism influence. ???? (I don’t have it too clear either).

Este es uno de esos garabatos que hace uno en una servilleta cuando se esta hablando por teléfono y uno hace como que presta atención. Mi madre ha sido fuente de inspiración de toneladas de experimentos gráficos como este.

This is one of those doodles you draw. On a napkin when you’re at the telephone pretending you’re paying attention. My mother has been a source of inspiration for tons of graphic experiments such as this one.

Batalla de Jerico/Battle of Jericho

El dibujo no es mío. Es de un compañero muy talentoso que se llama Javier Gómez y que ahora me esta ayudando a terminar las ilustraciones para la Biblia.
Además de ser un gran dibujante, es aficionado a la egiptología al cine clásico de horror y los musicales entre otras obsesiones raras. Me encantaría adjuntar un link a su blog ya que este podría resultarles muy interesante; pero, desgraciadamente, Javier esta tecnológicamente atrofiado y no tiene uno. Es por sus problemas con las computadoras que el trazado y coloreado de este dibujo sí son míos.

This drawing is not mine. It’s by a very talented workmate whose name is Javier Gomez and who is now helping me out to finish the Bible Illustrations.
Apart from being great at drawing, he is an Egyptology fan; he fancies classic horror films and musicals among other obsessions. I’d love to attach a link to his blog since it would be very interesting; but, sadly, Javier is technologically impaired and doesn’t have one. It’s because of his computer problems that the clean up and colouring of this drawing is mine.

Un diseño más para la caja del DVD de “Magos y Gigantes”. Quede contento con el efecto que resulto en las armaduras. Estos personajes en la película eran los guardaespaldas de una princesa y como buenos “guarros” usan lentes oscuros.

Another design for the “Wizards and Giants” DVD box. I was happy about the resulting effect on the armours. This characters were the bodyguard for a princess in the film, hence, as typical bodyguards they wear shades.
